Los Chorros Waterfall

In Costa Rica, waterfalls, or cascades, are not uncommon. We are a country of rivers and streams, which, together with the mountainous geography, causes unevenness in the riverbeds.
Some are more famous than others, such as the Llano de Cortes Waterfalls or the La Paz Waterfalls. There are also the Montezuma Falls or the Nauyaca Falls.

The Los Chorros waterfalls, located in Grecia, are not as famous as those mentioned above. But in the opinion of the author of this article, who has visited all these natural wonders, Los Chorros is a must-see.
Let’s review the reasons why this beautiful Greek waterfall is worth visiting.

Hiking to Los Chorros

The waterfalls are located within the Los Chorros Municipal Park, located in San Gertrudis de Grecia. The local municipality has neglected the park and during the pandemic they closed the facilities. Even now the park is still officially closed.
But there is good news, a neighbor lets visitors access the main trail for a small fee. If you go by car, you can park inside the property and leave it in the care of this neighbor.

The trail is not in the best condition. For example, there is a lot of mud, slippery sections and some fallen logs. Also, the downhill could be a lot for people who are not in a good physical condition.
But for hiking enthusiasts it is an excellent opportunity to feel closer to nature. This is because the entire trail goes through a primary cloud forest full of natural life and excellent views of the canyon!
Sandals or flat-soled shoes are not recommended for this trail.

The Two Waterfalls at Los Chorros

Once you reach the river from the trail, you will be just a few meters from the main waterfall. It is about 50 meters high and forms a pool of water at its base.
It is not recommended to swim there because water heads are the norm in the rivers of Costa Rica. This even in the dry season, since it is normal that rains still fall on the mountain.
Near the foot of the waterfall you will find the junction of two rivers, the Prendas River and the Quebrada Zamora.
The most striking thing is to see how some jets of water come out of the rock cliff that is on the side of the waterfall. Hence the name of the place.
At the exit of the trail the river forms small pools that allow you to put your feet in the cold water.
To go to the second waterfall, from the junction of the two rivers, you can go up the riverbed that is at the base of the main waterfall. This is not a recommended trip for novice nature explorers. The reason is that there is no path, you will have to dive up to your waist in the river and walk along its course for about 500 meters in the middle of a canyon.

After enjoying the falls, it is time to go back up. It is important not to stay up late, because being a canyon, or depression, the sunlight does not come directly in the afternoons.
The trail becomes more difficult to walk uphill. It is best to take it slowly, rest when you feel necessary, drink water, etc.
Enjoy the jungle when there is plenty of light, but if it is cloudy or the position of the sun does not allow direct light to the area, it is best to pay attention to the ground.
Once you get off the trail, it is much easier because the farm we used to enter is free of foliage.
You pick up the vehicle and depending on the time, you can pay a visit to the town of Grecia, for lunch, coffee or dinner.
You could take advantage of the day and visit one of the coffee tours in the area.
Or you can return to Serenity by Nature and rest from the hike. Remember, our rooms and house are available for you. Explore the west Central Valley of Costa Rica and its wonders from our hotel.
